Conservation Photographer & Advocacy Storyteller

Rainer Lentjes

I document threatened ecosystems, species and the people working to protect them. I am moving from wildlife and nature photography toward conservation photography and storytelling. I work in text as much as in images, and my focus is the story, not the single frame: who is affected, what is at stake, and what can still be done.

My background is not the usual one for a photographer. I am German, hold a degree in social work from the Netherlands, with a focus on international development. I spent six months in development cooperation in Ghana and worked with refugees in Germany. I am a certified scuba diver and followed a certified course in marine monitoring, surveying corals in the Philippines.

Imagery and video today competes with a flood of generated pictures. A convincing reef is one prompt away. A conversation with someone who has spent thirty years protecting that reef is not. That is what I am building toward: short documentary films and photography, built on real access and real trust, about people at the edge of ecological loss.

Animal welfare comes before the photograph. So does the dignity of the people in it. Consent, respect, no staged suffering, no shortcuts for a better shot. These are not preferences, they are conditions of the work.

Ultimately I want to put the stories to work, for the places and species I document and the people working to change things for the better.
